SEATTLE - The Seattle Mariners played the final game of the season in split screen.Part of attention was transfixed on field and making sure the Mariners closed with a victory in the hope it had post-season meaning. The other was on the out-of-town scoreboard hoping for the result they needed in Texas. This was a very hard game to manage. I had one eye on the scoreboard and one eye on what was happening on the field. That was kind of tough, Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. The Mariners did their part with a 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels as Felix Hernandez put the final notch on what could be a Cy Young Award season by throwing five shutout innings to secure the American League ERA title.Seattle started the day needing a win over the AL West champion plus an Oakland loss at Texas to force a one-game playoff on Monday for the ALs second wild card. The Mariners did their part, but the As completed a 4-0 victory as Seattle was in the fifth inning and finished one game ahead of the Mariners. It made for an awkward afternoon of emotions. The excitement and anticipation of possibly forcing a 163rd game was replaced by disappointment when the Oakland result went final.Ultimately, the Mariners should be satisfied. Seattles 87 wins in the first season of All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano were its most since 2007 and made September baseball relevant in the Pacific Northwest for the first time in a decade. To be able to play 162 games and every single one of them mean something, you cant ask for much more than that, Seattles Dustin Ackley said. The Oakland game was on in the Mariners video room but most players were getting updates from the scoreboard. Austin Jackson noticed at one point that Texas had runners on first and third and no outs. But he was left to wonder what happened as the Rangers score never changed from zero.Oakland already led 2-0 when Hernandez threw his first pitch at 1:10 p.m. PDT. Fans at Safeco Field let out a collective groan and a smattering of boos when the As took a 4-0 lead in the ninth inning. A brief Lets go Texas! chant started in the fifth inning with Hernandez on the mound but died off quickly. At 2:46 p.m. PDT, the As closed out their victory in Texas. The fans at Safeco Field responded with a brief standing ovation in the middle of Kendrys Morales at-bat after the As score was shown as final on the scoreboard.Hernandez allowed just one hit a€” Albert Pujols broken-bat blooper in the first inning a€” and struck out seven. Hernandez (15-6) had a 2.14 ERA, bettering the 2.17 of Chicagos Chris Sale. Thanks to a scoring change announced on Saturday that changed four runs to unearned from his previous start, Hernandez entered the finale with a chance to pass Sale and win the ERA title.Hernandez started the sixth inning getting C.J. Cron to ground out. McClendon gave Hernandez his moment in the spotlight, pulling him to a standing ovation with fans twirling the yellow K towel handed out before the game. Hernandez tipped his cap and saluted the fans, appearing the fight back tears. Were going to build a great thing here, Hernandez said. Weve got the pieces. Were going to be good. One out later, Cano was replaced to a standing ovation to complete his first season in Seattle after signing a $240 million, 10-year contract. Hernandez was the first at the top of the dugout to greet Cano, who hit .314 with 14 homers and 82 RBIs.I just thought, our fans should have an opportunity to thank them for the tremendous years both of them have had, McClendon said. I thought our fans were just tremendous in that respect. Both of those guys grinded it out all year and theyre big-time players and I thought they deserved that.RUN SUPPORTMichael Saunders had a pair of RBI doubles and Mike Zunino a two-run single to provide Hernandez run support and give Seattle a 4-0 lead after four innings.MARINERS UNDOINGSeattle had a 1 1/2-game lead for the second wild card on the morning of Sept. 7 but lost 12 of its next 17 games and dropped three games behind the As with four to play. Seattle had three five-game losing streaks and lost eight straight in April, but remained in contention to the final day. The Mariners finished 41-40 at home and 46-35 on the road. His calm approach at the plate took care of the rest. Ramos drove in four runs and Ian Desmond homered to help Jordan Zimmermann and the Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 6-3 on Sunday. Desmonds solo shot tied the score in the second inning and Ramos two-run double in the third put the Nationals ahead for good. The catcher drove in two more with a bases-loaded single in the fifth off starter Zack Wheeler (1-4) for a 5-1 lead. "His heart rate doesnt increase," Washington manager Matt Williams said of his cleanup hitter. "Thats key for anybody in the middle of the lineup driving in runs. ... Its no different at-bat just because there are guys out there." There was some debate about putting Ramos in the lineup for a third straight game, something he had not done since returning to action May 9. He missed more than a month with a hand injury and played only 78 games last year after multiple stints on the disabled list. "There was a conversation (Saturday) night about how he felt," Williams said "He was adamant about playing today because he felt that it was coming along." Though he was hitless in Saturdays 5-2 loss, Ramos sensed better days were ahead. On Sunday, he produced his first multihit game of the season. "Yesterday I was feeling good. I hit the ball well, "Ramos said. "I talked to (Williams) and said I want to play (Sunday). Every time I play games straight I feel better and better and better." Zimmermann (3-1) allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings for his first win in three starts. It came hours after Washington put left-hander Gio Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his pitching shoulder. Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard and Rafael Soriano shut out the Mets over the final three innings. Washingtons bullpen pitched 13 scoreless innings in the series as the Nationals took two of three. Soriano worked the ninth for his 10th save. One day after New York snapped a nine-game losing streaak to the Nationals, a scuffling Wheeler gave up five runs -- three earned -- and six hits in six innings.dddddddddddd He struck out five and walked two. "Its been a bunch of bad starts in a row here," said Wheeler, who has not won since April 14, "so I need to hurry up and turn it around and get back on the right track." Results aside, manager Terry Collins liked what he saw from the 23-year-old righty. "Its all about locating his pitching. But I tell you, I thought he had really good stuff today, he just made a couple mistakes and they got some big hits," Collins said. Juan Centeno hit a pair of RBI singles and Juan Lagares had a run-scoring single for the Mets, who have lost four of five. Washington is 5-1 against New York this season. The Mets scored twice against Zimmermann in the sixth, but the rally ended when Centeno was thrown out at second base after his run-scoring hit. All the New York momentum was stopped when the Nationals went to their bullpen. The Mets did not get a hit over the final three innings. "We feel very confident," Clippard said. "Were kind of in that mode right now of just, get us the lead and well do our thing." Zimmermann, a .385 hitter this season, singled in the fifth and later scored on Ramos base hit. Ramos doubled in two runs in the third after shortstop Ruben Tejadas fielding error with a runner on and two outs kept the inning going. Desmond has homered in back-to-back games. Kevin Frandsens RBI groundout in the eighth added an insurance run for Washington. NOTES: Gonzalez had an MRI. Results showed inflammation but no structural damage, Williams said. ...
